· Tip 34 of 100 · 67 days to Cyber Monday

Cart drawer vs cart page is a real conversion decision on a Shopify store, not a theme aesthetic, and the right answer depends on what a typical cart on your store actually contains. Most merchants inherit whichever one their theme shipped with and never think about it again. That is letting a template designer make a merchandising call for you.

Here is the mechanism. Adding to cart is not the goal, it is a checkpoint, and what happens in the next three seconds either preserves momentum or breaks it. A drawer slides in, confirms the add, and leaves the shopper exactly where they were, one tap from continuing. A cart page is a full navigation: new page, context gone, product grid gone. For a one-item impulse purchase, that page load is a speed bump right at the moment of maximum intent.

So drawers win, always? No. That is the part the “drawers are best practice” crowd skips. A cart with six items, mixed sizes, or a quote-like B2B order is a decision workspace. The shopper needs to compare line items, adjust quantities, check a subtotal against a budget, maybe paste a discount code and read a shipping estimate. Cramming that into a 320-pixel slide-over is how you get mis-taps, rage-quantity-edits, and abandoned carts that a full page would have saved.

How to choose in ten minutes

Mostly 1-2 items per order, sub-$100? Drawer, and route its main button straight to checkout. The full cart page still exists for the minority who want it.

Multi-item orders, bundles, B2B, gear lists? Cart page as the primary stop, and make it earn its keep: quantity controls that work with thumbs, a visible shipping estimate, no surprises held back for checkout.

Both audiences? This is the common case, and the standard pattern handles it: drawer for the quick confirm and momentum, with a clear “View cart” link to the full page for shoppers who need the workspace. Both containers, each doing its own job.

Whichever container you pick, the free-shipping progress bar from tip 9 belongs in it, and the cart must never be a dead end or a lecture. It is either a launchpad to checkout or a workbench for a decision. Decide which one your customers need, then get out of their way.

 · Tip 22 of 100 · 79 days to Cyber Monday

Express payment buttons, Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, belong at the top of your cart, above the regular checkout button, and if yours are missing or buried you are paying for it daily. Around 70% of carts are abandoned, and a meaningful slice of that is not doubt about the product. It is the form. Email, name, address, city, postcode, card number, expiry, the little code on the back, all typed on a phone keyboard, possibly on a train.

An express button deletes the form. The wallet already knows the address and the card; the shopper authenticates with a face or a fingerprint and is done. Every field you skip is friction removed, and for a returning Shop Pay user the entire checkout collapses into a single tap. That is not a payment option, that is a different checkout.

The checklist

Turn the wallets on. Shop Pay comes with Shopify Payments; Apple Pay and Google Pay are toggles in your payment settings. Shoppers only see the wallets their device supports, so enabling all of them clutters nothing.

Enable dynamic checkout buttons so the express option also appears on product pages for the one-item, buy-it-now shopper. Shopify’s dynamic checkout guide covers where they can live.

Check position, not just presence. Some themes tuck express buttons below the regular checkout button or hide them in the drawer’s collapsed state. Top of the cart, visible without scrolling.

Test on a real phone with a real wallet. Apple Pay only shows in Safari, Google Pay in Chrome. Your desktop preview will lie to you.

One caveat: express checkouts skip your carefully-crafted checkout upsells and note fields. That is the point. The shopper who taps Shop Pay chose speed over browsing, and intercepting them with one more offer is how you teach them the fast lane is fake. Let fast be fast.

 · Tip 9 of 100 · 92 days to Cyber Monday

A free-shipping threshold with a progress bar in the cart is the cheapest average-order-value lift in ecommerce. No redesign, no new traffic, no discount eating your margin. Just a line that says “You’re $12 away from free shipping” and a bar that fills up, quietly turning a $54 cart into a $70 one.

Why does it work so well? Because unexpected shipping cost is the classic deal-killer: in Baymard’s long-running cart abandonment research, extra costs like shipping sit at the top of the reasons shoppers bail. The threshold flips that psychology. Shipping stops being a penalty at checkout and becomes a prize in the cart, and shoppers will genuinely enjoy hunting for one more item to win it. Same fee, opposite emotion.

Setting the threshold

Set it just above your current average order value: AOV of $54, threshold of $65 or $70. Close enough that one small add-on clears it, far enough that clearing it actually grows the order. Set it at double your AOV and the bar reads as a taunt; shoppers ignore prizes they cannot reach. Then check the margin math on the orders that cross the line: the add-on item’s margin should comfortably cover the shipping you are eating. You know your baseline AOV from tip 1, so this is a five-minute calculation, not a guess.

Execution notes

Say the remaining amount, everywhere the cart appears. Drawer, cart page, and the moment an item is added. “$12 away” is the whole trick.

Celebrate crossing it. “You’ve unlocked free shipping” is a tiny win the shopper carries into checkout.

Suggest an item that closes the gap. A $15 add-on next to a $12 gap is service, not upselling. Many themes and cart apps do this natively.

Keep the promise at checkout. If the bar says free and checkout adds a fee for a rural surcharge, you have converted delight into a screenshot.

Most Shopify themes support a shipping bar out of the box or with a free app. For an afternoon of setup, it is the closest thing to a free lunch this series will offer.
