Shopify collection sort order decides what most of your shoppers see, and most stores have never made a deliberate decision about it. The collection page is your shelf space. The top of it is eye level. And on a shocking number of stores, what sits at eye level was decided by a drag-and-drop session eight months ago, or by whatever order products happened to be added in.

Think about what a great salesperson does in a physical store: greets the customer, reads them, and shows them the right product first. Your collection sort order is that salesperson for every single visitor. Right now it might be opening with a sold-out hoodie and a discontinued colorway.

“Manual” is where merchandising goes to die

Shopify gives every collection a sort setting, and the two most common choices are quietly the two worst. Manual is a snapshot of somebody’s judgment on the day they last touched it, decaying ever since: new products land at the bottom, sold-out products squat at the top, and nobody owns the result. Best selling sounds smart but is a rearview mirror with a feedback loop: products at the top get the clicks, the clicks make the sales, and the sales keep them at the top. Yesterday’s winners get tenure whether or not they deserve it today.

We are not guessing about the stakes. We read every sorting recipe running on our own platform and watched 20 million sessions flow through those collections: deliberately sorted collections beat unsorted ones in most stores, and the single most reliable move of all, pushing sold-out products to the bottom, was associated with conversion 56 percent above the sorted-fleet average. The full numbers, including the unflattering ones, are in our sorting data deep-dive.

What to do this week

Give each top collection an intent. Your bestseller collection sells confidence, your new-arrivals collection sells freshness. The sort should serve the intent, not fight it.

Get dead weight out of eye level. Sold-out and long-tail stragglers go to the bottom. Never the top, and never hidden entirely; a shopper who searches for that product should still find it.

Put money where the eyes are. First two rows: in-stock, proven or genuinely new, full size runs. Treat those slots like the paid shelf space they are.

Revisit weekly, or automate it. Inventory moves, seasons turn, bestsellers rotate. A sort order is perishable. This is exactly the job we built Dynasort to do automatically, but even a recurring 20-minute calendar slot beats “Manual” from last winter.

You baselined your numbers yesterday. Re-sort your top three collections this week and watch what the salesman does when you finally give him a script.

 · Tomorrow, tip 3: the product photo argument nobody actually settles with data. You will.
