· Tip 44 of 100 · 57 days to Cyber Monday

Abandoned cart email flows are the closest thing ecommerce has to found money: the shopper chose a product, put it in the cart, handed you their email, and left. With roughly 70 percent of carts abandoned, this is not an edge case, it is the majority outcome of buying intent on your store. A three-touch recovery flow is the standard play, and the first touch is worth more than the other two combined, for one reason: intent decays by the hour.

An abandoned cart is rarely a rejection. It is an interruption: the kid woke up, the train arrived, the shipping cost needed a think (tip 39), the phone rang. Reach that person within the hour and you are continuing a conversation they were already having with themselves. Reach them in three days and you are a stranger reminding them of something they no longer remember wanting.

The details that decide it

Show the actual cart. The product photo is the whole pitch; they already chose it. A text-only “you forgot something” wastes your best asset.

Do not open with a discount. Lead with the coupon in email one and you have just taught every future customer that abandoning a cart is how you get 10 percent off. Save the incentive for touch three, if you use one at all, and consider free shipping instead of a percentage: it answers the most common objection without repricing the product.

Link to checkout, not the homepage. Every extra step re-abandons some of them.

Set it up in Klaviyo or whatever ESP you already pay for. This is a two-evening project, and the flow you build this week runs unattended through Cyber Monday, when abandonment spikes with all those comparison shoppers, recovering carts while you sleep.

You spent tips 15 and 29 building the list. This is the flow that makes it pay before a single newsletter goes out.

 · Tip 29 of 100 · 72 days to Cyber Monday

Email popups convert when they respect the visitor, and the instant full-screen modal, the one that slams down before the homepage has even painted, is disrespect with a discount code attached. You know the move: you tap a link, the store flashes for half a second, and a wall demands your email in exchange for 10% off products you have not seen yet. It is the digital equivalent of a salesperson blocking the doorway.

Here is the trap that keeps this pattern alive: the instant modal does capture emails. The dashboard shows signups, so it stays. What the dashboard does not show is the visitors who bounced, the browsing sessions cut short, and the first impression spent on an ambush. You captured the email and taxed everything else; tip 24 taught you to distrust exactly this kind of one-sided win.

And to be clear, the answer is not “no popups”. Tip 15 made the case: the list you build now is your cheapest BFCM traffic, and a well-run popup is still the best list-builder there is. The answer is a popup that behaves like a good host instead of a tollbooth.

The respectful popup, specified

Timing: earn the interruption. Trigger after meaningful engagement, 20 to 30 seconds, half a page of scroll, or a second page viewed. On desktop, exit intent is the polite classic: it interrupts a departure, not a browse. A visitor who has seen your products can actually want your offer; a visitor at second zero cannot.

Offer: make it real. A concrete incentive, a first-order discount, free shipping, early access to BFCM drops, beats “join our newsletter” every time. If the offer would not make you type your own email, it is not an offer.

Dismissal: one obvious tap. A large, visible close button that works on the first try, on a phone, with a thumb. No 6px ghost X, no shame button (“No thanks, I hate saving money”), no reopening two pages later. Getting dismissed gracefully is part of the pitch: it tells the visitor your store takes no for an answer.

Frequency: once. Dismissed means dismissed for the session at minimum, ideally for weeks. Nagging converts nobody and brands you as a nag.

Mobile: stay legal and stay small. Google treats intrusive interstitials as a page-quality problem on mobile, and a partial banner or card often out-earns the full-screen takeover anyway.

Judge the whole trade, not the capture count: signups per hundred visitors, next to bounce rate and RPV for the same period. A popup that respects the visitor grows the list while the store keeps converting. That is the only version worth shipping, and it still gives you two solid months of list-building before Cyber Monday.

 · Tip 15 of 100 · 86 days to Cyber Monday

Email capture is the highest-ROI thing you can start on your Shopify store this week, because the list you build in September is the cheapest BFCM traffic you will ever buy. Come late November, ad auctions turn into a knife fight: every brand in your category bidding on the same shoppers at the most expensive CPMs of the year. Your email list is the one channel where Black Friday does not raise your prices.

Run the math on your own store. Suppose a decent capture setup converts a low single-digit percentage of visitors into subscribers. Over September and October, on ordinary traffic, that compounds into thousands of people who asked to hear from you, and on Cyber weekend you will reach them for approximately nothing, with an offer they signed up to get. Every one of those sends replaces a click you would otherwise be buying at peak auction prices. The list is not a marketing channel; it is a hedge against November ad costs, and the hedge only works if you start before the season.

The setup that respects everyone

A real offer, not “join our newsletter.” Nobody wants a newsletter. They want 10% off a first order, early access to drops, or a genuinely useful guide. Trade value for the address like you mean it.

Timing with manners. Delay the popup until the visitor has seen something, or trigger on exit intent. The instant full-screen modal captures a few addresses and taxes every other session; popup etiquette gets its own tip later.

Two fields maximum. Email, maybe a first name. Every extra field costs signups.

A welcome flow, immediately. The moment of signup is peak interest. A welcome email with the promised offer, sent within minutes through Klaviyo or whichever ESP you run, converts at rates your campaigns will never see again.

Capture at checkout too. Buyers who tick the marketing box are your future VIP segment, the exact people who will get early access when we plan BFCM offers in October.

Here is the part impatient merchants skip: send to the list now, weekly or biweekly, with actual substance. New arrivals, restocks, the story behind a product. A list that first hears from you on Black Friday is a cold list wearing a warm label, and inbox providers will route your big send accordingly. Deliverability is a reputation you earn in September, and spend in November.

Eighty-six days out is not early for this one. It is exactly on time, and every week you wait shrinks the payoff. Set up the capture today; your late-November self will send one email and remember why.
