· Tip 50 of 100 · 51 days to Cyber Monday

A BFCM early-access list lets you sell Black Friday before Black Friday: your best customers shop the sale a day or more before the public, and everyone wins. Halfway through the countdown, this is the first tip that is pure Cyber Monday prep, and it is the one to start today because it needs weeks of runway to build the list it runs on.

The mechanics are simple. Starting now, invite people to sign up for early access to your BFCM sale: a signup bar on the store, a line in your email flows, a mention on social. Then, the day before your public sale opens, that list gets the link. That is the whole trick, and it pays out four separate ways.

Intent capture. “Get early access to our Black Friday sale” converts browsers who are not ready to buy today but are already planning to buy in November. A discount popup asks for a purchase; this asks for a promise, which is much easier to give.

A pre-sold opening day. Your sale opens to an audience that asked to be there. No cold traffic, no ad spend, the highest-intent segment you own, first.

A smoothed spike. Cyber weekend traffic stresses everything: support, inventory math, your own attention. Moving your best customers a day earlier flattens the peak and gives you a soft launch that shakes out broken links and mispriced variants before the crowd arrives.

Loyalty that costs nothing. Early access is a reward with no margin cost. Your VIPs get status instead of an extra discount, and status is the cheaper currency.

Early access must be real: genuinely earlier, same or better terms. VIPs who find a deeper public discount two days later will remember it.

The rules that keep it honest

Early access only works if early is true. The list must genuinely shop before everyone else, on terms at least as good as the public gets. And guard the inventory math: if your doorbuster can sell out during early access, cap what the early window can take or choose a different lead offer. “VIPs bought everything” is a bad headline for the public opening.

You started capturing email back in tip 15. This is where that work starts compounding: the early-access list is the sharpest segment your list will ever produce, people who told you weeks ahead that they intend to buy from your sale. Build the signup this week. Every day you wait is a day of Q4 traffic walking past it.

 · Tip 45 of 100 · 56 days to Cyber Monday

BFCM offer planning should start from your margin and work backwards, not from a competitor’s banner and work sideways. Every November, stores set their discount by glancing at what everyone else did last year: 25 percent felt normal, 30 sounds exciting, 40 is what the big brand does. That is not a pricing strategy. That is copying homework from someone with a different cost structure, and possibly from someone who loses money every Cyber Monday without knowing it.

The number that matters is your floor: the discount at which an order stops contributing anything after every real cost is paid. Not gross margin off the top of your head. The whole stack: landed product cost, shipping you eat under your free-shipping threshold, payment fees, packaging, the pick-and-pack, and the acquisition cost of the click that brought the order. What survives all that is contribution margin, and it is the only budget your discount actually has.

Backwards from the floor, forwards to the offer

Compute the floor per product line, not store-wide. Your margins are not uniform, so your discounts should not be either. Deep discount the high-margin hero, hold the line on the thin stuff, and let the site-wide banner advertise “up to.”

A knowingly unprofitable offer is allowed, once you name its job. A loss-leader to acquire subscribers-to-be or repeat buyers can be smart. But that is a decision with a payback period attached, not a vibe. If you cannot say what the loss is buying, it is not strategy, it is panic with a banner.

Discount rate is not the only lever. Free gift over a threshold, bundle pricing, free expedited shipping: each can feel like a better deal than the margin it costs, especially against tip 9’s threshold math.

Decide now, in October, in a spreadsheet. The worst pricing decisions of the year are made in late November, reactively, the night a competitor’s email lands. Your floor does not change because their banner got louder.

The stores that win BFCM are not the ones with the biggest number on the banner. They are the ones still profitable on December 1st. Know your floor, then go be as loud as it allows.

 · Tip 20 of 100 · 81 days to Cyber Monday

Product bundles raise average order value without the margin sacrifice of a discount, and that distinction matters more in Q4 than any other time of year. A 20% off code buys a bigger cart by giving away a fifth of the revenue. A well-built bundle buys a bigger cart by answering a question the shopper already had: “what goes with this?”

The failure mode is treating bundles as a clearance chute: three slow movers shrink-wrapped together at 30% off. That is not a bundle, that is a discount wearing a trench coat. The bundle that works starts from your bestseller, because the bestseller already has the demand, and attaches its natural companion, the thing a knowledgeable friend would tell you to grab with it. Camera and memory card. Sneakers and the cleaner kit. Coffee and the filters that actually fit.

Finding the companion

You do not have to guess. Your order history already knows. Pull your last few hundred multi-item orders and look at what actually ships alongside your bestseller; the pairing your customers invented is almost always better than the one your merchandising meeting would. Support tickets and reviews are the second source: “wish I had ordered the refills at the same time” is a bundle spec written by a customer.

Keep the logic self-evident. If you need a paragraph to explain why the items belong together, they do not.

Price the bundle slightly below the sum, mostly on the companion’s margin, never on the hero’s.

Put the bundle on the hero’s product page, where the demand already is, not on a lonely “Bundles” page nobody visits.

Watch AOV and margin per order, not bundle take rate. A bundle chosen by 8% of buyers that lifts their order 40% is a win; a popular bundle that swaps full-price orders for discounted ones is a leak.

Shopify now supports fixed bundles natively, and Shopify’s bundling guide walks through the setup options. Build one bundle this week, hero plus companion, and let it run into October. By the time BFCM discount season arrives, you will have an AOV lever that does not care what your competitors put on sale.
