Collection Sorting
Collection Sorting
Collection sorting, also known as collection merchandising, is the core function of Dynasort. It ensures that the most relevant and high-performing products are displayed in an optimal order within your Shopify collections. Rather than relying on Shopify’s default sorting options, Dynasort allows merchants to automate and customize product rankings using Recipes, Boost, and Pinning.
How Collection Sorting Works
- Dynasort Syncs Collection Data – Collection and product data are continuously updated from Shopify.
- Recipe-Based Sorting – Products are ranked based on weighted Attributes assigned in a Recipe.
- Boost Adjustments – Products with Boost settings receive additional ranking points across all collections.
- Pinning Specific Products – Merchants can pin products to fixed positions within a collection.
- Sorting Order Applied – The optimized collection order is pushed to Shopify.
- Automated Refreshing – Sorting updates every 10-60 minutes, depending on the merchant’s plan.
Recipes: The Foundation of Collection Sorting
Recipes define how products are ranked within collections. Merchants create Recipes by selecting Attributes (e.g., Best Sellers, Inventory Levels, Price) and assigning weights to determine importance. The total score for each product is calculated, and products are arranged accordingly.
For example:
- “Best Sellers” might have a weight of 30 points.
- “Price over $100” could contribute 20 points.
- “New Arrivals” might add 10 points.
Each product’s score is the sum of its attribute values, determining its ranking within the collection.
Boost: Enhancing Product Visibility
Boost is a product-specific ranking adjustment that applies across all collections. If a product has a Boost value of 10, it will receive 10 additional points in every collection it appears in, helping push key products higher in rankings.
When to Use Boost:
- Highlighting high-margin or promotional products
- Pushing seasonal products to the top of multiple collections
- Ensuring flagship items maintain visibility storewide
Pinning: Locking Product Positions
Unlike Boost, Pinning is collection-specific and allows merchants to fix products to certain positions within a given collection. If a product is pinned to position 4 in Collection ABC, it will always stay there when Dynasort updates rankings, while other products adjust around it.
When to Use Pinning:
- Keeping key products in specific spots (e.g., featured items always at the top)
- Ensuring brand or category balance within a collection
- Preserving manual merchandising decisions alongside automation
Collection Sorting vs. Managed Collections
While Collection Sorting determines the ranking of existing products within Shopify collections, Managed Collections take it a step further. Managed Collections allow Dynasort to select which products belong in a collection based on data-driven criteria and push them to Shopify.
