To change the default sort order of a Shopify collection, open your Shopify admin, go to Products, then Collections, and click the collection you want to edit. Scroll to the Products section and pick a new order from the Sort dropdown, such as Best selling, Price, Newest, or Manually. Save, and your storefront shows the new order right away.
What Are the Built-In Sort Options?
Shopify gives every collection the same fixed menu of sort orders:
- Best selling, ranked by Shopify’s own sales-based logic
- Alphabetical, A to Z or Z to A
- Price, lowest first or highest first
- Newest or Oldest, by product creation date
- Manually, where you drag products into a fixed order
Whatever you pick becomes the default order shoppers see when they land on the page, before they touch any sort or filter controls in your theme.
Where Do the Built-In Options Fall Short?
Every built-in order uses exactly one signal. Best selling ignores inventory, so sold-out winners can sit in the first row where nobody can buy them. Newest ignores performance entirely. Manual sorting captures your judgment on the day you drag products around, then freezes it; nothing updates when items sell out or a slow product suddenly takes off.
There is also no way to combine signals (say, newest plus recent sales) and no way to re-sort on a schedule. For a small catalog that rarely changes, that is fine.
