What Is Search Re-Ranking on Shopify?

Search re-ranking is the practice of keeping Shopify’s search matching, which products qualify for a query, while replacing the order they appear in. Matched products are re-scored by your own data, such as sales, conversion rate, inventory, and margin, so the results most likely to sell appear first instead of whatever default relevance surfaces.

Matching vs Ordering

Search is really two jobs. Matching decides the set: which products answer “linen shirt”, with typo tolerance and synonyms included. Ordering decides the sequence within that set. Re-ranking touches only the second job. That distinction is what makes it safe: shoppers never see products that do not fit their query, and they never lose results they would have found before. The set is identical; the sequence is smarter.

What Signals Can Set the Order?

Anything you would merchandise a collection with works in search:

  • Demand signals: units sold, revenue, conversion rate, add-to-cart rate over a window you choose.
  • Inventory signals: in-stock status, quantity, full size runs, so buyable products lead.
  • Business signals: margin, on-sale status, product age, review ratings.

A well-built re-ranker also handles the no-data case: when products tie, the order falls back to Shopify relevance, so a brand-new store looks exactly like default search on day one and improves gradually as data accumulates. There is no cliff and nothing to babysit.
