Collection sorting and search sorting are separate systems in Shopify. Collection sorting controls the product order on collection pages, set per collection through a sort order or a merchandising app. Search sorting controls the order of storefront search results, which Shopify ranks by relevance to the query. Changing one has no effect on the other.
What Controls Collection Order?
Every Shopify collection has its own sort order setting: Best Selling, price, alphabetical, date, or Manually. That setting governs only the collection page itself. Merchandising apps like Dynasort work at this layer, replacing the static built-in options with weighted recipes that combine signals such as sales velocity, inventory, newness, and margin, applied through Shopify’s API.
What Controls Search Results?
Storefront search is ranked by Shopify’s relevance engine, based on how well products match what the shopper typed. You can influence it with Shopify’s free Search & Discovery app (product boosts, synonyms, filters), but you do not set a sort order for search the way you do for a collection. Collection sort settings have zero effect on search ranking, and search tweaks never touch your collection pages.
Which Should You Optimize First?
Start with collections. They are the pages you fully control, they sit behind your category navigation, and a sorting change there reaches every visitor who browses. Search matters most when shoppers arrive knowing exactly what they want; collections shape discovery for everyone else. Measure the two separately as well: collection analytics for browsing behavior, Shopify’s search reports for queries. If a term keeps showing up in search with poor results, that is often a hint a dedicated collection should exist for it.
Dynasort automates the collection side. Install it from the Shopify App Store or see how it works.
