Abandoned Cart Flow: Three Touches, First Within the Hour

Abandoned cart flow: three touches, the first within the hour while intent is hot. (Klaviyo or any ESP)
← All 100 tips  ·  Tip 44 of 100  ·  57 days to Cyber Monday

Abandoned cart email flows are the closest thing ecommerce has to found money: the shopper chose a product, put it in the cart, handed you their email, and left. With roughly 70 percent of carts abandoned, this is not an edge case, it is the majority outcome of buying intent on your store. A three-touch recovery flow is the standard play, and the first touch is worth more than the other two combined, for one reason: intent decays by the hour.

An abandoned cart is rarely a rejection. It is an interruption: the kid woke up, the train arrived, the shipping cost needed a think (tip 39), the phone rang. Reach that person within the hour and you are continuing a conversation they were already having with themselves. Reach them in three days and you are a stranger reminding them of something they no longer remember wanting.

Three touches, three jobs

Not three reminders. Each email does something the previous one could not.

Within 1 hour
The doorman
“You left this.” Cart contents, product image, one button back to checkout. No discount, no essay. Intent is still warm; just reopen the door.
~24 hours
The closer
Handle the objection that stalled them: shipping and returns answers, a review or two, sizing reassurance. Sell, don’t nag.
~72 hours
The last call
Honest urgency: stock reality, or your incentive if you use one. After this, stop. Four-plus emails is begging.

Klaviyo or any ESP can run this; Shopify has a basic built-in version. The schedule matters more than the tool.

The details that decide it

  • Show the actual cart. The product photo is the whole pitch; they already chose it. A text-only “you forgot something” wastes your best asset.
  • Do not open with a discount. Lead with the coupon in email one and you have just taught every future customer that abandoning a cart is how you get 10 percent off. Save the incentive for touch three, if you use one at all, and consider free shipping instead of a percentage: it answers the most common objection without repricing the product.
  • Link to checkout, not the homepage. Every extra step re-abandons some of them.
  • Set it up in Klaviyo or whatever ESP you already pay for. This is a two-evening project, and the flow you build this week runs unattended through Cyber Monday, when abandonment spikes with all those comparison shoppers, recovering carts while you sleep.

You spent tips 15 and 29 building the list. This is the flow that makes it pay before a single newsletter goes out.
