Product Bundles: Raise AOV Without Giving Away Margin

Bundles raise AOV without giving margin away: pair the bestseller with its natural companion.

Product bundles raise average order value without the margin sacrifice of a discount, and that distinction matters more in Q4 than any other time of year. A 20% off code buys a bigger cart by giving away a fifth of the revenue. A well-built bundle buys a bigger cart by answering a question the shopper already had: “what goes with this?”

The failure mode is treating bundles as a clearance chute: three slow movers shrink-wrapped together at 30% off. That is not a bundle, that is a discount wearing a trench coat. The bundle that works starts from your bestseller, because the bestseller already has the demand, and attaches its natural companion, the thing a knowledgeable friend would tell you to grab with it. Camera and memory card. Sneakers and the cleaner kit. Coffee and the filters that actually fit.

Anatomy of a bundle that sells

Demand comes from the hero. The companion rides along. The price nudges, it does not bleed.

$65 · already proven
Brings the demand

Natural companion
$24 · high margin
Rides the demand

$82

vs $89 separately
AOV up, margin intact

The saving is real but small, a reason to say yes, not the reason to buy. If your bundle only works at 30% off, the pairing is wrong, not the price.

Finding the companion

You do not have to guess. Your order history already knows. Pull your last few hundred multi-item orders and look at what actually ships alongside your bestseller; the pairing your customers invented is almost always better than the one your merchandising meeting would. Support tickets and reviews are the second source: “wish I had ordered the refills at the same time” is a bundle spec written by a customer.

  • Keep the logic self-evident. If you need a paragraph to explain why the items belong together, they do not.
  • Price the bundle slightly below the sum, mostly on the companion’s margin, never on the hero’s.
  • Put the bundle on the hero’s product page, where the demand already is, not on a lonely “Bundles” page nobody visits.
  • Watch AOV and margin per order, not bundle take rate. A bundle chosen by 8% of buyers that lifts their order 40% is a win; a popular bundle that swaps full-price orders for discounted ones is a leak.

Shopify now supports fixed bundles natively, and Shopify’s bundling guide walks through the setup options. Build one bundle this week, hero plus companion, and let it run into October. By the time BFCM discount season arrives, you will have an AOV lever that does not care what your competitors put on sale.
