How Far Down Do Shoppers Click in Search Results?

Further than most merchants assume. In one large Shopify catalog we analyzed, covering 188,000 search result clicks, 28.5 percent of clicks went to position one, and nearly half landed past position three. Shoppers who search are committed: they scroll, compare, and click deep into the grid.

What the Click Curve Means

Two things are true at once. Position one is the single most valuable slot on the page, earning more than a quarter of all clicks, so what ranks first is a genuine merchandising decision. And at the same time, the tail is long: positions four and beyond collect almost half the clicks between them. Search shoppers are not homepage browsers who bounce off the first row. They arrived with intent and they work the page.

How to Act on It

  • Treat the top three slots as prime shelf space. Your best-converting, in-stock products belong there, not whatever text relevance happened to surface.
  • Do not neglect the middle of the grid. Since shoppers genuinely reach positions four through twelve, sold-out items and weak sellers parked there still cost real clicks.
  • Measure your own curve. Click-by-position data for your store beats any benchmark. Dynasort records the position of every search click it serves, so you can see exactly where your shoppers stop scrolling.

None of this requires more traffic. The clicks in the tail already happen today; the only question is whether the products sitting in those positions deserve them. Reordering the same results for the same shoppers is one of the few merchandising changes that costs nothing to test.

Dynasort tracks search clicks by position and ranks accordingly. Install it from the Shopify App Store or put your best products where clicks happen.
