How to Control Which Products Shopify Recommends

Natively, control means hand-picking: Shopify’s Search & Discovery app lets you set related and complementary products per product. That is fine for a small catalog. At scale, control means rules: define the pool a row draws from, rank it with your own data, and set guardrails like sold-out handling and per-brand caps.

Manual Curation Does Not Scale

Picking complements for every product is a merchandising job with no end date. New products launch uncurated, stockouts silently break your picks, and seasonal shifts make last quarter’s pairings wrong. The stores that keep manual picks fresh have someone doing it weekly; everyone else has a “You may also like” row nobody has looked at in months.

Rules Instead of Picks

With Dynasort, each placement is bound to a recommendation recipe, and control comes in three layers:

  • Scope the source. Recommend from the whole catalog, or stay inside the seed product’s own collection, so a boots page recommends boots.
  • Rank with your data. Weight sales, conversion, margin, recency, and stock the way the row’s job demands: complements in the cart, discovery on the home page.
  • Set the guardrails. Decide how sold-out products are handled, cap how many slots one brand can take, and set a minimum count below which the row hides itself.

The result is a row you control without curating: change the rule once and every product page follows, including the ones you launch next month.

Dynasort gives you rule-level control over every recommendation row. Install it from the Shopify App Store or read the recommendations guide.
