How to Pin Products to the Top of a Shopify Collection

To pin products to the top of a Shopify collection natively, set the collection’s sort order to Manually, then drag your chosen products into the first positions. The catch: manual sort freezes the entire collection, so everything below your pins stays wherever it was. Merchandising apps solve this by holding pins in place while automatically sorting the rest.

How Do You Pin in the Shopify Admin?

Open the collection, change Sort to Manually, and drag products into the order you want. The first few slots are now yours. For a small, stable collection you are happy to manage by hand, this is all you need.

What Is the Manual Sort Trap?

The problem is what happens to everything below your pins. Switching to manual sort freezes the whole collection:

  • Products that sell out stay exactly where you left them, including row one.
  • Products added later land at the bottom of the list, where few shoppers ever scroll.
  • The ranking never updates, so the order drifts further from what shoppers actually buy.

You set out to control five positions and ended up owning two hundred.

Pin a Few, Automate the Rest

Merchandising apps separate the two jobs. In Dynasort, you pin specific products to fixed positions, and a sorting recipe (sales velocity, inventory, newness, margin, whatever fits the collection) continuously arranges everything around the pins. Sold-out products sink, rising products climb, and your hero placements never move. Our look at product position effectiveness shows why those first slots deserve deliberate control rather than leftovers from last quarter’s drag-and-drop session.

Pinning plus automated sorting is exactly how Dynasort works. Install it from the Shopify App Store or see how it works.
