Email capture is the highest-ROI thing you can start on your Shopify store this week, because the list you build in September is the cheapest BFCM traffic you will ever buy. Come late November, ad auctions turn into a knife fight: every brand in your category bidding on the same shoppers at the most expensive CPMs of the year. Your email list is the one channel where Black Friday does not raise your prices.
Run the math on your own store. Suppose a decent capture setup converts a low single-digit percentage of visitors into subscribers. Over September and October, on ordinary traffic, that compounds into thousands of people who asked to hear from you, and on Cyber weekend you will reach them for approximately nothing, with an offer they signed up to get. Every one of those sends replaces a click you would otherwise be buying at peak auction prices. The list is not a marketing channel; it is a hedge against November ad costs, and the hedge only works if you start before the season.
The setup that respects everyone
- A real offer, not “join our newsletter.” Nobody wants a newsletter. They want 10% off a first order, early access to drops, or a genuinely useful guide. Trade value for the address like you mean it.
- Timing with manners. Delay the popup until the visitor has seen something, or trigger on exit intent. The instant full-screen modal captures a few addresses and taxes every other session; popup etiquette gets its own tip later.
- Two fields maximum. Email, maybe a first name. Every extra field costs signups.
- A welcome flow, immediately. The moment of signup is peak interest. A welcome email with the promised offer, sent within minutes through Klaviyo or whichever ESP you run, converts at rates your campaigns will never see again.
- Capture at checkout too. Buyers who tick the marketing box are your future VIP segment, the exact people who will get early access when we plan BFCM offers in October.
Here is the part impatient merchants skip: send to the list now, weekly or biweekly, with actual substance. New arrivals, restocks, the story behind a product. A list that first hears from you on Black Friday is a cold list wearing a warm label, and inbox providers will route your big send accordingly. Deliverability is a reputation you earn in September, and spend in November.
Eighty-six days out is not early for this one. It is exactly on time, and every week you wait shrinks the payoff. Set up the capture today; your late-November self will send one email and remember why.
