There is no single right number of products for a Shopify collection, but smaller usually beats bigger. A collection should hold roughly as many products as a shopper will realistically browse, and its first rows must be relevant. Our analysis of more than 1,100 Shopify collections found that oversized collections create choice overload, where extra options add friction instead of sales.
Why Do Bigger Collections Often Convert Worse?
Shoppers do not scroll through hundreds of products. Attention concentrates on the first rows, and anything below the first few screens is effectively invisible. When a collection grows past what anyone will actually browse, two things happen at once: strong products get buried, and shoppers face so many options that some leave without choosing anything. We unpacked this pattern in our choice overload analysis.
How Do You Right-Size a Collection?
- Split catch-all collections into focused sub-collections built around how customers shop: by use case, category, or price tier.
- Audit the first two rows of each collection. If they are not your strongest, most relevant products, fix the sort before worrying about the count.
- Use position data to spot products that convert well from deep positions. Those are candidates for their own smaller collection, as covered in product position effectiveness.
- Keep a full catalog collection if you want one, but do not make it your primary navigation destination.
Does Size Matter More Than Sorting?
No. A large collection with sharp, regularly updated sorting will outperform a small collection in a random or stale order. Size determines how much work the sort has to do. The bigger the collection, the more important it is that ranking reflects current demand, stock, and relevance rather than the order products happened to be added.
If you run large collections out of necessity, automate the sorting so the first rows always earn their spot. That removes most of the downside of size without forcing you to restructure your catalog.
Dynasort automates this. Install it from the Shopify App Store or see how it works.
