Why Are Sold-Out Products Showing First in My Shopify Collection?

Sold-out products show first in a Shopify collection for one of three reasons: the collection uses a manual sort order that froze before the items sold out, the sort order (such as price low to high) happens to favor them, or nothing in your setup considers inventory at all. The fix is inventory-aware sorting that pushes out-of-stock items down automatically.

Why does Shopify keep sold-out products at the top?

Shopify’s built-in sort orders do not look at inventory. Best selling ranks on historical sales, so a product that sold well before running out can hold the first row for weeks. Price sorts put whatever is cheapest or most expensive first, in stock or not. Alphabetical sorts on names. And manual sorting is a snapshot: the order you set stays exactly as it was until you change it, no matter what sells out in the meantime.

How do you push sold-out products down?

You have three realistic options:

  • Re-sort by hand whenever something sells out. This works for one small collection and fails the moment you have many collections or fast inventory turnover.
  • Hide sold-out products with smart collection rules or theme settings. This keeps the page clean but removes products entirely, which can cost you search traffic and back-in-stock demand.
  • Use automated, inventory-aware sorting that demotes out-of-stock products to the bottom while keeping them on the page, then promotes them again when stock returns.

What about products that are almost gone?

A product with two units left in one unpopular size is effectively sold out for most shoppers, yet Shopify treats it as available. That is why an inventory buffer matters: you set a threshold, and anything at or below it gets treated like a stockout for sorting purposes. Shoppers see buyable products first, and nearly-gone items stop wasting your best positions.

Dynasort handles this automatically. Install it from the Shopify App Store or see how it works.
